Curriculum/rotations
All rotations in our curriculum are in two-week blocks. There are four rotations that comprise the core of our fellowship:
- Consult Fellow 1 (C1)
- Consult Fellow 2 (C2)
- Clinic Fellow
- White River Junction Veteran’s Affairs Fellow
In addition to these core rotations, fellows have dedicated academic and elective time. At present, core rotations are distributed throughout the three years of fellowship. With our complement increase from two to three fellows per incoming year, beginning in July 2027, academic time will become blocked to encompass the majority of the second year of training, with consult and clinic rotations weighted towards the first year and elective time weighted towards third year.
- Consult Fellow (C1 and C2): The C1 fellow triages, evaluates, and cares for all inpatient consults in Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. This involves timely patient evaluation, staffing with the gastroenterology attending on service, coordinating complex care, communicating clearly with our inpatient endoscopy service, and ensuring that pertinent post-hospitalization gastroenterology care is organized. The C2 fellow assists in non-emergent, new overnight consults, with inpatient endoscopy, and on high-volume consult days when C1 needs assistance. Gastroenterology does not have a primary service; our inpatient service is consultative only though we work closely with primary and other consultative services. Consult service fellows have frequent opportunities to teach and mentor Geisel School of Medicine students and internal medicine residents.
- Clinic Fellow: Core responsibilities include participation in subspecialty faculty clinics in inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatology, motility, hepatology, and acute post-hospitalization clinic visits as well as the triaging of urgent clinic referrals.
- White River Junction Veteran’s Affairs Fellow: Core responsibilities include outpatient endoscopy and inpatient consults.
In addition to these core rotations, there are two-week electives for second- and third- year fellows in the following rotations:
- Motility (required)
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Hepatology
- Global Health
- Therapeutic endoscopy (in development)
- Obesity Medicine (in development)
Clinics
Fellows have two ½-day outpatient continuity clinics:
- White River Junction Veteran’s Affairs Clinic on Tuesday afternoon
- Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on Thursday morning
The Consult Fellow 1 (C1) fellow does not have outpatient clinic scheduled. Consult Fellow 2 (C2) has an abbreviated Thursday morning clinic.
