Overview

Generative AI is changing how trainees find information and reason through clinical problems, and unguided use risks eroding the reasoning that training exists to build. A 2025 NEJM review names three failure modes: deskilling, never-skilling, and mis-skilling. This session takes a pedagogy-first approach to them. It introduces the DEFT-AI framework for turning an ordinary moment of learner AI use into a teaching encounter, and the distinction between cyborg and centaur collaboration. Dr. Thesen works the framework through two realistic clinical scenarios step by step.
