The concept of competency-based medical education (CBME) has been around for decades, as have calls to more fully implement its five core components. While most UME programs consider themselves “competency-based,” few have gone past the first steps of the process. In this talk, we’ll explore the potential benefits and costs of developing a more comprehensive CBME program.
Objectives:
- Explain the key components of the CBME conceptual framework and how they inform curriculum design and assessment strategies.
- Identify practical steps and strategies for transitioning from traditional time-based education to a competency-based approach within medical training programs.
- Discuss potential barriers and mitigating factors to implementing CBME.
