Overview

Providers caring for people with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often lack familiarity with the spectrum of complementary and alternative treatments (CAM) available, as well as the evidence base, safety considerations, and ethical implications of their use. This knowledge gap limits their ability to engage in informed, collaborative discussions with families who are interested in or already utilizing CAM therapies. Additionally, many providers are not equipped to address the cultural, personal, and community factors that influence CAM use, which can hinder their ability to provide holistic and culturally competent care.
