Overview

This interactive session helps participants understand why health literacy and plain language matter by reviewing organizational and national data related to patient understanding, communication, safety, and outcomes. Participants will examine evidence demonstrating the impact of health literacy on the patient experience and quality of care, then apply plain language principles to improve healthcare communication. Through discussion and practice, participants will learn to recognize common barriers to understanding, translate complex healthcare language into patient-friendly communication, and identify opportunities to incorporate plain language into their daily interactions with patients and families.
