Patrick Hattan, MD, co-chief medical officer at Hampstead Hospital and Residential Treatment Facility (Hampstead), a member of Dartmouth Health, received the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Exemplary Psychiatrist Award, a national honor recognizing physiatrists who have made exceptional contributions to improving the lives of people living with mental health conditions.

Established in 1990, the NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist Awards recognize physiatrists nominated by NAMI members, state organizations and affiliates across the country. Hattan was honored during NAMI New Hampshire’s annual meeting in June.

In addition to his leadership role at Hampstead, Hattan serves as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He is also the associate medical director at New Hampshire Hospital. Throughout his career, he has focused on expanding access to evidence-based, trauma-informed mental health care for children and adults with complex behavioral health needs.

Hattan has worked closely with NAMI New Hampshire to strengthen patient and family engagement in psychiatric care. Under his leadership at Hampstead, the organization established a Patient and Family Advisory Committee to ensure patients and families have a voice in improving care and the patient experience.

He has also collaborated with providers, individuals with lived experience and community partners to improve mental health education, including training related to New Hampshire’s revised involuntary emergency admission procedures. Through his clinical, educational and leadership roles, Hattan has emphasized family engagement, recovery-oriented care and reducing stigma surrounding mental illness.
