Dartmouth Health joins the National Disaster Medical System Definitive Care Program

Dartmouth Health has joined the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Definitive Care Program. Originally established to support the repatriation of wounded troops in the event of a large-scale combat operation, the NDMS Definitive Care Program partners with over 1,600 healthcare facilities nationwide.

The program is a coordinated partnership between the Department of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense at the federal, state and local government levels.  It leverages private healthcare capacity to provide care for civilian and military patients who require additional or complex care unavailable within an area affected by disasters, public health emergencies, repatriation events, or military contingencies.

The Definitive Care Program manages the process of repatriation from impacted areas to reception and intake at facilities designated from the NDMS healthcare network. This partnership demonstrates Dartmouth Health’s commitment to the communities it serves and its support to our nation in times of extreme crisis.
