I’m very proud of the outstanding fellowship program we have built to equip aspiring vascular surgeons with the skill, knowledge and expertise to provide their patients the best care possible.

Richard J. Powell, MD

Dartmouth Health’s vascular surgery fellowship program, part of the Heart and Vascular Center (HVC), is now ranked the number one of its kind in the United States on Doximity, the largest professional network for healthcare providers nationwide. This ranking is based on the program’s Hirsch index score, which measures the productivity and citation impact of its alumni.

“This ranking is especially meaningful because it reflects the breadth of clinical research conducted by our trainees, and the esteem of our colleagues in other programs,” said HVC director Richard J. Powell, MD. “I’m very proud of the outstanding fellowship program we have built to equip aspiring vascular surgeons with the skill, knowledge and expertise to provide their patients the best care possible.”

Doximity uses the Hirsch index, also called the h-index, as a key component of its Residency Navigator. This tool is used by approximately 90% of medical school graduates matching into residency programs. Built from Doximity’s network of more than 80% of all U.S. physicians, the Residency Navigator leverages insights from the largest survey and CV analysis of current residents and recent alumni. Additionally, Doximity members contribute nominations, ratings, and hand-written reviews to help medical students find the right training program.

“Choosing a residency program is one of the most significant decisions in a young physician’s career,” said Nate Gross, MD, co-founder of Doximity. “Residency Navigator is designed to offer students the insights and data they need to identify the residency programs that best fit their personal and career goals.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment, and a testament to outstanding nature of our training programs at HVC,” said Philip P. Goodney, MD, MS, vascular surgery section chief at Dartmouth Health’s Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. “I wish to thank and congratulate our trainees, our program directors, Dr. Bjoern Suckow and Dr. David Stone, for their stewardship of our programs, and acknowledge everyone’s hard work and emphasis on research and impact.”
