Common questions people ask about psychotherapy
What is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
CBT is an evidence-based method of therapy shown to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of problems. CBT focuses on the interconnection between thoughts (cognitions), emotions, and behaviors. CBT examines the patterns of beliefs we have developed about ourselves, others, and the world and how we use these beliefs as a lens through which we understand our experiences. CBT helps us to challenge those beliefs that may not be helping us and replace them with more accurate beliefs that can free us up to change.
Do you see couples?
Yes, in fact, relationship discontent and communication breakdown are common reasons that many couples seek help at Hanover Psychiatry. Couples therapy can help you and your partner learn how to better communicate and how to identify and meet each other’s needs. In addition to aiming to improve or restore the relationship, couples therapy can also help couples determine their commitment to the relationship and transition through many difficult decisions.
Will the focus be on my childhood?
There are times that it is helpful for your clinician to gain an understanding of your childhood experiences in order to best help you move forward. Although some treatment approaches specifically target childhood experiences as a way to free someone of symptoms affecting their current functioning, most treatment approaches are much more concerned with the “here and now.” Part of your first appointment with a clinician at Hanover Psychiatry is to work with you to gain an understanding of your intentions for your treatment and develop a plan that will best support your goals.
